In 1986, brothers Larry and Dennis Leight decided that they wanted to open their own retail store. As such, they had a singular vision – to echo the Los Angeles vibe in their products. But instead of a contemporary LA, the brothers wanted their products to exude and echo the golden era of American design. With a keen focus on this vision, the brothers sought to purchase unreleased eyewear that were made during the twenties up to the fifties. As fate would have it, they got wind of a liquidator from Connecticut who was selling a large lot of frames and eyewear made during America’s Golden Age. As they sifted through the lot, one name consistently popped out — Oliver Peoples. And as such, the brothers decided to take the moniker.

Initially, the Leights sold items from the lot they bought. Most of these frames were sold primarily for their unique designs and not for their brand name. It is noteworthy to point out that most of the manufacturers from the Golden Age were discreet in putting their names on their products. This, in turn, inspired the brothers to make a special effort to design and construct optical reading glasses and sunglasses instead of merely building a big brand name. For them, an acknowledgement of their work through word of mouth is much better than having lots of fans who have nary an idea of the aesthetics involved in crafting the right frame for lenses, be it for reading spectacles or sunglasses. Today, Oliver Peoples’ current offerings still echo the designs of the products included in the lot the brothers first bought – products which have a quixotic mix of vintage appeal and modern sensibilities.

Year in, year out, taste makers from the world over, from Tokyo to London, UK, influence what is going to be hot, discarding last season’s offerings. This also sends ripples to the eye wear industry, where what is fashionable now becomes a thing of the past tomorrow. In Oliver Peoples, people can find the essence of true and enduring style, one which does not simply erode with time or with the whims of a fickle industry.
