A Technical Sailing Apparel Primer – 6 Things You’ll Need on the Water
If you are new to technical sailing, you need to know what key pieces of sailing apparel are needed to keep you in your best condition. It may be tempting to get out on the water and make due with things you already have, but having the right tools in your toolkit, so to speak, will make all the difference in the world in your performance—and enjoyment. Following the basic guidelines below will keep you comfortable, protected, and able to focus on the job at hand.
The first thing you will want is a polyester dry top. These wick moisture away from your body, keeping you cool, dry and comfortable. These purpose-made shirts also help give you the freedom of movement you need; they will not bind up as other shirts often will. You have the option of short or long sleeves, just don’t forget that long sleeves offer additional protection. Many forget how intense the sun can be on the open water.
You will need a good pair of shorts. It is important to stay away from cotton, as this type of material will hold moisture against your body, keeping you uncomfortable. Look for a reinforced seat—this will help prevent riding up and will give you good abrasion resistance. It’s easy to overlook undergarments. Choose some polyester boxer briefs. Again, our old friend cotton is not the best choice here. A proper garment will help wick away moisture, keeping you cool while you are active but cutting the chill when the temperature drops.
A good spray top is one of the most obvious and important pieces of apparel. The reason for this is because it will block wind and water, keeping you warm, dry and able to focus on your sailing. Just as with the dry top, you want your spray top designed to give you full freedom of movement. Also, make sure that you size it large enough to add additional layers underneath for those cooler days.
Gloves and Boots
A good pair of gloves are an essential piece of apparel. They provide hand protection, helping you prevent painful rope burns, but they also help you get a good grip. They should fit snugly, but still allow full freedom of movement and dexterity. A pair of waterproof neoprene boots will take the pain out of hiking, and are also great for keeping your feet warm on those colder days.
